NUJP condemns threats vs Iloilo radio station

By Tara Yap Iloilo City— The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP- Iloilo chapter) has denounced the alleged threats made against personnel of Radio Mindanao Network (RMN Iloilo).

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines “We join our colleagues in condemning the planned attack against RMN broadcasters,” said NUJP-Iloilo in a statement. Led by its president Elyrose Naorbe of The Daily Guardian newspaper, NUJP-Iloilo is calling on Police Regional Office (PRO-6) to investigate the threats made against personnel of the radio station. RMN-Iloilo Station Manager Ronel Sorbito earlier wrote to Chief Supt. John Bulalacao, PRO-6 director, to inform authorities of a plot to hire several assassins to kill broadcasters of the station. RMN Iloilo has tackled issues such as corruption, politics and illegal drugs. “We also support any legal action that our colleagues may choose to take against those responsible for this threat,” NUJP-Iloilo noted. The media group is also calling on Iloilo media workers to close ranks, especially against any threats. “Any attempt to silence a journalist or a news organization is an attack on the media in general,” NUJP-Iloilo pointed out. “We urge our colleagues to take extra care and immediately report any attempt to influence their work through intimidation, threats or attacks even as we stand firm against the curtailment of press freedom and the people’s right to information,” NUJP-Iloilo added.
