We’re barely into 2018, and there’s already rumblings of the imminent release of Samsung’s flagship phone. Released back in April of last year, the Galaxy S8 and S8+ was a resounding hit and solidified Samsung’s position in the smartphone market. The curved almost bezel-less screen design was remarkable and set a bench mark as to how a smartphone screen should be done. With stiff competition coming not only from Apple, but from other smartphone manufacturer like OnePlus, LG, Huawei and Xiaomi, 2018 seems to be a pivotal moment for Samsung. Not one to rest on their laurels, Samsung is kicking off 2018 with what seems to be one hell of a smartphone.
If the leaks and rumors are to be believed, the Galaxy S9 and S9+, which has already been tagged with a March 16 release date, is shaping up to be a formidable product. While it would seem that the S9 and S9+ won’t look that much different from last year’s release, the underlying technology it is built with seems to be a huge stepping stone into something greater.
With today’s obsession with imaging, emphasis on the improvement of the camera of the new Galaxy phone seems to be of priority. To point out the leaked data, the S9/S9+ will be the first ever smartphone that will have a camera with a 1.5f aperture. That means that Samsung’s new flagship will be equipped with a camera lens that has the widest receptacle of light among current smartphone. This means that the S9/S9+ will be able to take even better low-light photography. Definitely an interesting proposition and based on their previous track record, Samsung is one of the best manufacturers to make a 1.5f aperture camera phone work. The front-facing camera is also said to be equipped with an 8 megapixel camera and a standalone iris recognition camera. Better selfies? Check. Iris recognition for smartphone auto unlocking? That remains to be seen, but I am excited by the prospect of it.
There are also improvements made on the PCB board level of the Galaxy S9/S9+, improvements that allow Samsung to create a smaller and slimmer logic board for the phone. This would result in wither an overall slimmer profile for the phone or have them be able to retain the same size of the S8/S8+ but with a bigger sized battery. I’m hoping Samsung goes for the former as a slimmer phone would be a more attractive proposition.
Samsung has long been the de facto forerunner in the display technology and the Galaxy S9/S9+ would seem to be cutting-edge in that regard. Samsung’s new tech, as detailed by various leaks, would allow the Korean tech giant to make an AMOLED screen that is substantially thinner and lighter than what is currently seen in the market. With nary a dip in quality and durability, it is detailed in numerous reports that the Samsung’s newest AMOLED screen technology is ready for primetime and would result in a huge leap in how manufacturers incorporate the display into a smartphone.
So far, the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ is looking to be a smartphone that not only has the potential to be the slimmest smartphone in existence, it will also be able to shoot even more robust photos in even very low-light setting. Some reports even go as far as saying that it is akin to shooting pictures using an SLR. While it is yet to be seen if Samsung can indeed pull all those off with the release of the 2018 model of their Galaxy smartphone, March 16 can’t come soon enough.
