CEBU CITY — The suspect in the gruesome murder of a girl in Lapu-Lapu City last March was found dead in his detention cell early morning Sunday, May 24.
Renato Llenes was believed to have committed suicide by hanging himself in the infirmary cell of the Lapu-Lapu City Jail.
Llenes was charged with murder after he admitted killing Christine Lee Silawan last March 10.
Llenes admitted stabbing the girl repeatedly before skinning her face. The girl’s body was found in a vacant lot in Barangay Bankal, Lapu-Lapu.
Police Brig. Gen. Albert Ignatius Ferro, chief of the Police Regional Office Central Visayas (PRO 7), said there were indications that what happened was a suicide but the death will be investigated further.
“An investigation will be conducted to determine if it was really a suicide or there was foul play involved,” said Ferro.
Jail Supt. Jessie Calumpang said a shirt that was cut out and tied together to form a rope was used in the suicide.
Llenes was placed in a separate cell after he was reportedly threatened by the girl’s uncle, whowas also a detainee in the facility, said Calumpang
Calumpang said that according to some inmates, Llenes was heard several times threatening to commit suicide.
