I was lucky enough to get hold of what is fast becoming a hard-to-get commodity nowadays, a ticket to the much talked about musical, “Ang Huling El Bimbo,” at the Resorts World Manila’s Newport Performing Arts Theater (NPAT).
The author with Ely Buendia and friends
I really wanted to see this show because it features the songs of the ’90s most iconic band, Eraserheads (bilang ako ay batang ’90s at laking Eraserheads!) Thank you for the invitation of the RWM’s Corporate Communications Team to the show’s gala night (pang-gala raw kasi ang beauty ko! ) I was able to watch it with my celebrity friends, actress Valeen Montenegro, videographer Riel Manuel and choreographer Bryan Talatala (sume-celebrity friends?!!!) I also got the chance to meet Eraserheads front man, Ely Buendia.
I won’t spill the beans on the story as everything about it was a big surprise. All was totally unexpected from how we have appreciated the songs of the E-heads all these years.
The NPAT was in total silence as the performers moved around the stage and took the audience on a rollercoaster ride of emotions (may roller coaster... fiesta carnival ba ’to?! ) I managed to feel the angst of the characters played by the trio of Gian Magdangal, OJ Mariano and Jon Santos. Their younger counterparts Reb Atadero, Boo Gabunada and Topper Fabregas also showed great command of the roles given them. Tanya Manalang and Menchu Lauchengco–Yulo were in their element as performers.
“Ang Huling El Bimbo” was also able to showcase the talents of a little girl who, ironically, is a stage newbie. (Ganyan din ako nu’ng nenita pa!)
Martina Paz, or MJ as most of the other cast members call her, is a 10-year old, grade 5 student of an exclusive school in Makati who was “accidentally” discovered by people involved in the production (sowsyal na bagets ha!) They saw her videos on social media winning in her school’s dancing and singing competitions (dami ko nang videos pero bakit ’di ako nadi-discover?!). She is Liwanag, a short but pivotal role which she played with great sensitivity. (Kung bata lang ako, nag-audition akong Liwanag!)
“No, I just feel really excited. I really have fun performing,” said MJ when I asked if she feels nervous everytime she goes on stage to perform in front of a large audience. (Mana sakin ang batang ’to!)
A scene from ‘Ang Huling El Bimbo’ musical'
Aside from being consistently in her school’s academic honors list, MJ is a be-medalled gymnast, which explains why she is a natural when it comes to stage movement. A consistent winner in her school’s singing competitions, MJ also wowed the SRO crowd with her angelic voice.
“I am actually very shy. But the things that I do onstage, I got those from my parents. I probably got my energy and drive from my dad who is a fighter. He’s not the type to say no to a challenge. My dancing, I probably got that from my mom. My singing? Hmm, I guess, hati na lang since both of them don’t sing, haha!,” she said, giggling. (Sige ka, bawas baon ka sa school!)
She was referring to her proud parents, Martin and Jay Paz. Martin is a respected name in the advertising and marketing worlds being a top Marketing Executive. (Ay, dapat i-friend ko ang mga magulang!)
Asked what advice she’d like to give kids who are shy to show the talents they have,“Well, it’s actually the same advice I give myself all the time: Don’t be shy and follow your dreams.”
Push!)
