'Mamang Sorbetero' goes viral for giving out free ice cream at a community pantry in Pasay City

Pastor Elmer Leal or “Mamang Sorbetero” went viral on social media for giving out free ice cream at a community pantry in Barangay 136, Pasay City.

Community pantry organizer Merlynn Alipio Limjap posted on Facebook saying that Leal or “Mamang Sorbetero” on Wednesday, April 21, arrived at the community pantry she organized and to the surprise of everyone, announced: “Libreng Ice Cream!!”

Residents who lined up under the heat of the sun lined up to get the free ice cream.

"Nakakataba ng puso. Kahit alam natin na si Manong tindero ay may pangangailangan din, kusa pa rin silang nagbibigay," (It is very heartwarming to see that Mamang Sorbetero voluntary shared his ice cream even if he also needed to earn a living) according to the post of Limjap.

The good deeds of "Mamang Sorbetro" caught the attention of a Mandaluyong City resident who sent him money via GCash so he can give away more ice cream.

"Nakakatuwa dahil meron kaming dessert dito sa Brgy 136 Pasay Community Pantry,"(I am happy because we have dessert here at Barangay 136 community pantry) Limjap said.

The Barangay 136, Pasay City community pantry was inspired by the Maginhawa model started by Ana Patricia Non.

Like Maginhawa, the  Pasay City pantry also operates on a "give what you can, take what you need" mantra.

Limjap and her co-organizers are accepting donations both in cash and in kind.

Leal, in an interview with ABS-CBN, said he also wants to help those who are in need in this time of pandemic in his own little way by giving them free ice cream.

Leal has three children, two are in college, while the youngest is in Grade 6.

He said that aside from selling ice cream everyday from which he earns P500, he is also active in serving the church.
