UAAP: NU Bulldogs clinch bonus

by Kristel Satumbaga National University (NU) clinched a twice-to-beat semifinal privilege with a 25-20, 25-21, 25-9 drubbing of University of Santo Tomas on Sunday in UAAP men’s volleyball at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. The defending champion Bulldogs pounced on the Tigers’ lackluster plays, needing only 66 minutes in posting their 11th win in 12 outings. Bryan Bagunas and Angelo Almendras scored 15 points each for NU while merging for 26 of the team’s 47 attacks. James Nativitad also stepped up for the Bulldogs and chipped in 13 points and seven digs. Meanwhile, Far Eastern University boosted its bid for the remaining twice-to-beat incentive after downing University of the Philippines, 25-20, 25-14, 19-25, 25-9. Peter Quiel and Jude Garcia scored 15 and 12 points for the Tamaraws, who improved to 10-2 at second – one and a half games ahead of fellow semifinalists Ateneo and Adamson (9-4). FEU banked on its solid blocking by posting 13 blocks, four each from Quiel and Garcia, apart from outplaying UP in the offensive end with more attacks, 48-39.
