Ateneo reclaimed the UAAP women's volleyball throne after a three-year absence, besting University of Santo Tomas, 25-17, 25-22, 25-22, on Saturday in Game 3 of their best-of-three finals series at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The Lady Eagles displayed championship experience with their aggressive plays and rock-solid defense anchored on triple towers Maddie Madayag, Bea De Leon and Kat Tolentino to take their third title overall before a crowd of 21,347.
It was a fitting sendoff for graduating players De Leon and Madayag and a gift for freshman coach Oliver Almadro, who transitioned from being the Ateneo men's team mentor to fill in the void left by Tai Bundit.

Tolentino spearheaded the Lady Eagles’ charge with 15 points highlighted by 11 kills while Madayag chipped in 10 points including back-to-back attacks in the pivotal stretch of the match that gave them a 24-22 third-set lead.
A spike from Jules Samonte sealed the win for Ateneo.
“Nothing compares to this feeling right now,” said De Leon, who was later adjudged the Finals Most Valuable Player after scoring all her six points when it mattered most.
Leaning on a 26-24, 14-25, 25-21, 25-15 Game 2 triumph on Wednesday, Ateneo continued to provide a tough wall at the net to stop UST top spiker and Season MVP Sisi Rondina and Rookie of the Year Eya Laure.
The Tigresses showed signs of life in the third after rising from an 18-14 deficit to tie it at 22-all, but Madayag and Samonte was there to rescue the Lady Eagles.
Rondina finished with 18 points while Laure scored 10 points, but it was not enough to destroy Ateneo’s defense as the Lady Eagles managed 14 blocks including four each from Madayag and Samonte.
UST coach Kungfu Reyes was gracious in defeat, saying they did their best but Ateneo’s experience proved stronger than their resolve.
“Sumubok kaming tapusin nang maganda this season, but iba yung experience ng Ateneo. Proud pa rin ako sa mga players ko,” said Reyes, whose team rose from a seventh place finish last season.
