DENR to inspect more Bohol coastal areas

By Dave Albarado Tagbilaran City – Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Roy Cimatu plans to inspect other coastal towns in Bohol hosting resorts to find out whether or not environmental laws are observed or violated, in the wake of major concerns over world-renowned Boracay Island in Aklan. Bohol provincial administrator Alfonso Damalerio II on Friday said Cimatu wanted to go to Anda town after he visited Pangalo Island last Tuesday. He said a helicopter is on standby in case Cimatu and National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) chief Ernesto Pernia decides to visit Anda and other coastal towns in  Bohol. Cimatu, however, had to fly back to Manila for an engagement in Manila. He, however, told Damalerio that he will find time to visit other places in Bohol in the future where resorts are located. Anda is two hours away from Tagbilaran. The town is home to several resorts and also features white sand beaches similar to what can be found in Panglao Island’s Alona Beach. The provincial administrator said the secretary has a standing order for the Department of Environment and Natural Resources personnel to inspect all coastal areas in the province for compliance with environmental laws. The inspection may be extended to Dauis town, the other town located in Panglao Island, including coastal areas of the capital Tagbilaran. Cimatu inspected the Alona Beach in barangay Tawala on Tuesday after getting reports some resorts allegedly violated the 20-meter no-build zone.
