Vatican names Boholano bishop for Mati diocese

Bantugan Tagbilaran City – The Vatican has appointed a Boholano to be the new bishop for the Diocese of Mati, Davao, according to the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP). Bishop-elect Abel Apigo is a rector of the St. Francis Xavier Regional Major Seminary in Mindanao, but he is the son of the late Genaro Apigo of Loay town and Porferia Apigo of Lila town in Bohol. He is the 18th Boholano to be ordained as bishop Apigo was born in Calinan, Davao City, on May 21, 1968 and ordained priest on April 18, 1994. His first assignment was parochial vicar of San Pedro Cathedral in Davao. Earlier, the Vatican also appointed Bishop Socrates Mesiona of Sevilla town as the new prelate of the Diocese of Palawan, bringing the list of Boholano bishops to 17 including Bishop Alberto S. Uy of the Diocese of Tagbilaran. The announcement of his appointment as bishop-elect of Mati was read after a Mass celebrated as part of the 18th annual gathering of friends of REMASE, a group formed to support the studies of seminarians in Mindanao. The communique was signed by Apostolic Nuncio Gabriele Caccia and read by Fr. Reynaldo Retardo, vice rector of REMASE.
