Town police chief arrested for extortion

By Nonoy Lacson ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Philippine National Police (PNP) Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group (IMEG) Mindanao Field Office arrested a town police chief in Zamboanga del Norte for robbery and extortion. Police Regional Office for Zamboanga Peninsula (PRO-9) Director Police Brig Gen Jesus D. Cambay Jr. identified the suspect as Police Capt. Haran Ulah, acting chief of police of Godod town in Zamboanga del Norte. Ulah was arrested by IMEG Mindanao field unit operatives, led by IMEG Mindanao Field Unit Commander Lt Col. Joshua Alejandro, at about 5 p.m. inside his office located at Poblacion in Godod town proper in Zamboanga del Norte. Cambay identified the victim as Jose A Abarca, a teacher at the Sarawagan Elementary school in the same town, and a resident of Barangay Raba in Godod. Initial investigation disclosed that on May 29, Ulah allegedly demanded P10,000 from Abarca as protection money so that his treasure hunting and mining activity at Sitio Riverside, Barangay Raba will be spared from police raids. Ulah also assured Abarca that his laborers working at the mining site will not be apprehended and jailed. Recovered from the possession of Ulah was the P5,000 marked money paid him by Abarca as protection money, his PNP-issued M16 rifle and caliber-.45 pistol, and two cellular phones. Cambay said Ulah’s arrest should serve as warning to policemen not to involve themselves in extortion activities in the region.
