Wirecard exec spotted in Cebu this week

By Jeffrey Damicog Former Wirecard chief operating officer (COO) Jan Marsalek was in the Philippines this week, said Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra on Thursday. Jan Marselek Jan Marsalek (Wirecard/Facebook) Citing the Bureau of Immigration (BI) data base, Guevarra said the 40-year-old Austrian national arrived in Cebu last June 23. “That was two days ago and (he) left yesterday morning bound for China,” he said during an interview over CNN Philippines. Guevarra said the BI has already checked the closed circuit television camera (CCTV) footages at the airport to determine the presence of the Austrian. “A check with Cebu International Airport, the CCTV there would not show such person ever left the country,” he revealed. “We don’t even know for sure if he arrived on June 23,” he added. Because of this, Guevarra said the BI is checking if the flight data was “fabricated for some reason or only technical glitch.” Guevarra said Marsalek also entered the Philippines last March 3 and stayed in a hotel in Makati City until he departed on March 5. “We don’t know if for business or personal purposes because we got report and we are verifying here that he is married to a Filipina,” he said about Marsalek’s March trip. “We are checking on that,” Guevarra assured. Wirecard, which has been described as a German fintech firm, found itself in a scandal following the discovery of accounting irregularities which showed that there are US$2.1 billion missing. Aside from the BI, Guevarra has also directed the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to investigate persons in the country who are allegedly connected to Wirecard following consultations with the Bangko Sentral nf Pilipinas (BSP). Guevarra said the NBI will be working with the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) on the investigation.
