President Duterte has renamed the National Disaster Consciousness Month (NDCM) as the National Disaster Resilience Month (NDRM) which will be observed in July.

(JAY GANZON / MANILA BULLETIN) In his Executive Order no. 29 signed on June 28, 2017, Duterte highlighted the need to promote the significance of disaster resilience. Based on the EO, the NDCM provides national provides national government agencies and local government units (LGUs) ample time "to implement their disaster awareness campaigns with longer focus and on a comprehensive basis." Duterte, however, said that the public's awareness has already increased due to previous government efforts and previous emergencies, hazards, and disasters in the importantce of disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM). According to Duterte, the NDRM shall be collectively observed by all Filipinos throughout the country through the conduct of activities covering the four thematic areas of disasters. These include disaster prevention and mitigation, disaster preparedness, disaster response, and disaster rehabilitation and recovery. Based on the EO released to the members of the media Thursday afternoon, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) shall take the lead in the preparation, coordination, organization, and implementation of the programs and activities to be held during NDRM. Regional and local DRRM Councils and Barangay DRRM Committees are also mandated to ensure the implementation of all programs and activities. The NDRRMC is also authorized to call upon any department, agency, office and instrumentality, including the private sector and civil service organizations, for the necessary assistance so it can fully perform its functions.
