“I will report the unity and collaboration here,” said Secretary Carlito Galvez after a meeting with the Western Visayas COVID-19 Task Force, which is headed by Office of Civil Defense (OCD-6) Regional Director Jose Roberto Nuñez, here on Tuesday, June 2.
“It is one of the strongest collaborations (in the country),” Galvez emphasized.
According to Galvez, the lockdown measures implemented by the local governments were crucial in the slow spread of COVID-19, and the eventual downgrading of the region to modified general community quarantine (MGCQ).
Galvez met with Governors Arthur Defensor Jr. of Iloilo, Esteban Evan Conteras of Capiz, Rhodora Cadiao of Antique, Samuel Gumarin of Guimaras, and Mayor Jerry Treñas of Iloilo City, the regional capital. Only Governors Florencio Miraflores of Aklan and Eugenio Jose Lacson were not able to attend.
Galvez also apologized to local officials for the abrupt return of thousands of repatriated overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) last week.
Defensor told Galvez that local governments had to scramble just to accommodate the big volume of returnees with the last-minute coordination from the national government.
Meanwhile, Galvez turned over 2,000 personal protective equipment (PPEs) to provincial governments and Iloilo City.
Galvez also turned over 200 swab test kits to the Western Visayas Medical Center (WVMC), which now has a laboratory conducting COVID-19 tests.
