Cockpit arena in Quezon converted into classroom

MULANAY, Quezon – Pupils of the San Isidro Elementary School (ES) in Barangay San Isidro, this town, have been using a cockpit arena as classroom since the start of the face-to-face classes in August.

San Isidro ES was declared by the Department of Education (DepEd) permanently closed in mid-November 2020, based on validation and assessment conducted by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) and the Engineering Office of the DepEd.

School perimeter was restricted and no one was allowed to enter for possible danger.

San Isidro ES teacher Agnes Par said they asked Barangay Chairman Arnulfo Decena to let them use the baragay hall as classroom for face-to-face classes for the meantime.

However, Decena did not allow and instead let them use the cockpit arena he owns.

Par doubts if the local Department of Education has authorized the cockpit to be used as classroom.

But Par said the cockpit is called the Decena Sports Arena which can host many events, leading the local Deped to allow it to be used as classroom.

The cockpit hosts different grades while the faculty is located at the center.

Covid health protocols are still enforced, Par said.

Decena has donated a one-hectare lot and a two-classroom building is under construction.

Mayor Aristotle Aguirre said the local government will provide another two-classroom building.

Gelo Amisola, Mulanay public information officer, said that they have documented the school built in 1978 on their FB page and telling the real story behind it.

Different grade levels have occupied it since March.

Before it was damaged by natural calamities, 232 pupils from kindergarten to Grade Six were enrolled at San Isidro ES.
