CDO police chief dies after freak motorcycle accident

By Martin Sadongdong  The chief of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (CPO) died in the hospital Tuesday afternoon two weeks after figuring in a freak motorcycle training accident. In a statement, the Northern Mindanao Police Regional Office (PRO-10) said Police Colonel Nelson Aganon, director of the Cagayan de Oro police, passed away around 3:30 p.m. at the Polymedic Medical Plaza. He was 47 years old. This, after Aganon suffered head injuries when he failed to complete a four-foot gap jump during a motorcycle training course at Camp Edilberto Evangelista last May 22. Accordingly, Aganon was riding on a KLX dirt bike when one of its tires accidentally slipped on the ramp as he attempted to jump, causing him to be outbalanced and thrown off the vehicle. He was rushed to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Polymedic Medical Plaza where he underwent an emergency surgery but died after 13 days of monitoring, the PRO-10 said. Police Colonel Bernard Banac, spokesperson of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said Aganon's demise was a "huge loss" to the police community. "The PNP high command mourns the passing of Police Colonel Nelson Aganon who succumbed to serious injuries suffered during training. His death is a huge loss to the PNP, particularly the CDO CPO that he ably led in his last command assignment," Banac said in a statement sent to the Manila Bulletin. "PCol Aganon died in line of duty while fulfilling a duty at personal capability enhancement and skills development that all PNP personnel are expected to perform," he added. https://twitter.com/MB_mrtnsdngdng/status/1136211082949775360 Condolences to the bereaved family of Aganon were also expressed through social media where he was remembered as a "good and very responsible" police officer by his colleagues and subordinates. The social media accounts of several police stations in Cagayan de Oro City also changed their profile pictures into a white candle enveloped in a black ribbon as a sign of mourning. Meanwhile, Banac assured that the orphaned family of Aganon will receive all benefits and entitlements due to deceased PNP members. Aganon has served as the Cagayan de Oro police's chief for 14 months, having been designated to the office since April 2018. Prior to this, he had also served as the spokesperson of the Central Luzon Police Regional Office (PRO-3).
