Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo confirmed Gaerlan’s appointment shortly before his scheduled oath-taking before the President at the Palace Wednesday afternoon.
"The President has appointed as new justice of the Supreme Court - CA Justice Samuel Gaerlan, a graduate of San Beda,” he said in an interview with reporters in Malacanang.
When asked why Gaerlan was chosen for the position, Panelo answered, "The usual basis for appointing justices of the Supreme Court — competence and integrity.”
Gaerlan was chosen from a list of six contenders submitted by the Judicial and Bar Council last month. He fills the seat left vacant by SC Justice Diosdado Peralta, who is now the high court’s new Chief Justice.
Gaerlan served as a trial court judge before joining the Court of Appeals in 2009.
