Asian Granny who fought back at attacker in San Francisco donates over US$900,000 to Asian community

An elderly Chinese woman who fought back at a racist attacker in San Francisco said she will donate over US $900,000 to the Asian community.

Xiao Zhen Xie, 79, was waiting for the traffic light to change at an intersection on Market Street in San Francisco when a man approached and punched her face last Wednesday, March 17.

In a video of the attack that went viral online, Xiao was seen fighting back at the attacker after being punched.

Xiao then picked up a stick and hit the man while shouting, “You bum! Why did you hit me?”, the USA Today reported.

Authorities identified the suspect as 39-year-old Steven Jenkins.

Prior Xiao, Jenkins also attacked 83-year-old Vietnamese man Ngoc Pham.

A GoFundme fundraiser that has been set up by his grandson to cover Xiao's medical expenses has reached over US$900,000 from thousands of supporters as of this writing. The initial goal of the fundraiser was to raise only US$50,000.

Xiao said she has decided to donate all proceeds to the Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) community.

"She also stated multiple times to donate all the funds generated in this GoFundMe back to the Asian American community to combat racism," her grandson John Chen wrote in the page.

"She insists on making this decision saying this issue is bigger than her."
