According to news reports, celebrations will literally be “fit for a Queen”—on a truly royal scale, featuring millions of participants around Britain and climaxing in a TV spectacle expected to be watched by a billion worldwide. The four-day festivity is a welcome break—a change of view from the news of crises and conflicts in other parts of the world, and a rejuvenating pause from the doldrums caused by a post-pandemic downturn. The Platinum Jubilee celebration commenced last Thursday, with a trooping the color parade which involved 1,500 soldiers, 400 army musicians, and 250 horses. It was a grand spectacle missed by the public for so long due to Covid-19 related restrictions. There was also a 42-gun salute and a six-minute flypast over Buckingham Palace of 70 aircrafts from each branch of the armed forces. Among the events unfolding this weekend include a grand BBC concert at Buckingham Palace where around 22,000 guests, including 5,000 essential workers such as medics and emergency services staff. This is also a way of honoring the heroes of the pandemic, who have sacrificed their lives in the service of others. On Sunday, there will be “Big Jubilee Lunches,” with 10 million people expected to share food and friendship with their neighbors. Celebrations will culminate with a “'Platinum Jubilee Pageant,” a public parade through central London. The show will end with singer Ed Sheeran singing “God Save the Queen.” The Queen, according to royal watchers, deserves all this pomp and pageantry as she has always been a stable presence amid tumultuous moments in the world’s history. The celebration also marks the “breaking” of a lot of records—Queen Elizabeth II has reigned for 70 years and nearly four months, longer than any other monarch in British history. The previous record was held by her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria, who reigned for 63 years, seven months, and two days until 1901. At 96, Queen Elizabeth II is the oldest current monarch and head of state in the world. The Queen also has a “constant presence” as she has travelled to more than 100 countries since 1952—another record for a British monarch—and made more than 150 visits to Commonwealth nations. The Daily Telegraph calculated that she travelled the equivalent of 42 times around the world before stopping overseas trips in November 2015 aged 89. The long reign of the Queen allowed her to meet 14 British prime ministers, from Winston Churchill to the present prime minister, Boris Johnson.
