What does MMDA traffic czar Nebrija think of 'kamote' cyclists?
Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) traffic czar Bong Nebrija took to Facebook Tuesday, Feb. 16 to give his thoughts on the dangers posed by irresponsible cyclists.
Nebrija shared a post from Facebook page Gadget Addict the same day which showed a video clip of several cyclists crossing a busy highway a la the character in the 1980s arcade classic Frogger.
But Gadget Addict noted that the matter wasn't all fun and games. "It’s scary to know you’ll be arrested for reckless imprudence if you hit one of these kamote cyclists blasting through the red light on a highway," it wrote.
It futher asked, "what is the solution for all the kamote cyclists who ignore red lights, counterflow, swerve across lanes etc? There aren’t many laws that cover cyclists.. at best there's a few local ordinances."
To this, Nebrija promoted the need to instill #SafeBikingCulture among the errant bikers.
"San mas ligtas sa kalsada ba o sa footbridge? O nakikipagpatintero lang kay Kamatayan? (Where is it safer, on the road or the footbridge? Or should you just play a game of patintero with Death?)" asked the MMDA official.
"With this kind of road users behavior there should be a mandatory bikers safety education and mandatory bikers insurance. It’s an accident waiting to happen," he said.
