DepEd-Manila commemorates 149th martyrdom of GomBurZa

Three public schools in the city of Manila were named after the three martyred priests, Fathers Mariano Gómez, José Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora, because of their contribution to Philippine independence.

As the country observes the 149th anniversary of their martyrdom, the Department of Education (DepEd) - Division of City Schools in Manila organized on Wednesday, Feb. 17, “GAROTE: Isang Birtwal na Simposyum kaugnay sa paggunita ng Ika-149 taong kabayanihan ng GomBurZa” shared this - and more - to recognize the heroism of these three secular priests and how their sacrifice became a pivotal moment in Philippine history.

On February 17, 1872, the three martyred priests popularly known as “GomBurZa” were executed by garrote by the Spaniards in Bagumbayan (now Rizal Park) after they were charged with treason and sedition in connection with the 1872 Cavite Mutiny.

During the virtual symposium, which was conducted in partnership with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), DepEd Manila Schools Division Superintendent Maria Magdalena Lim shared that there are three public schools in the DepEd Division - Manila that were named after the GomBurza.

These are P. Mariano Gomez Elementary School in Sta. Cruz, P. Jacinto Zamora Elementary School in Pandacan, and P. Jose Burgos Elementary School in Sampaloc.

As the country commemorates the martyrdom of GomBurZa, Lim noted that it remains a challenge for teachers and educators to ensure that the younger generation will remain informed of their heroism.

“It is a challenge for us, teachers, to instill among the youth, the Generation Z, the importance of our heroes and their contribution to our independence,” Lim said in Filipino.

Despite this, Lim remained optimistic that the Filipino youth will continue to be inspired by heroism and sacrifices by their forefathers - especially of the GomBurza.
