“I must say that we are already very proud of what our athletes are doing for our nation this 10th ASEAN Schools Games,” Umali said. “We are looking forward to beating our own record four years ago when we came in fourth during the Games held in the Philippines, year 2014 – the highest rank we achieved so far in ASG,” he added.

Filipino trackster and CALABARZON’s sprint queen Jessel Lumapas bagged her second gold medal in the 2018 ASG on July 23 at the Mini-Stadium in Bukit Jalil. The Grade 11 athlete from Nazareth School of National University clocked 25.03 seconds in clinching the girls’ 200-m run over teammate Decerie Jane Niala (25.07) and Indonesia's Nuryanti Erna (25.25), who took the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Lumapas, who hails from Dasmariñas City, Cavite, also shared that she dedicates her medal to her most supportive parents. Meanwhile, teen tracksters Tara Borlain and Bernalyn Bejoy also bagged runners-up medals in 800m girls event. Vietnam's Ngo Thi Khanh Ny emerged with the gold medal after she timed two minutes and 13.90 seconds. Borlain's 2:15.54 and Bejoy's 2:17.51 secured them the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Over at the Gymnastics Gymnasium, still in Bukit Jalil, Justine Ace de Leon scored the silver medal in the boys artistic gymnastics' vault event. De Leon received a final score of 13.533 points for the silver medal spot, placing next to the gold medalist Trinh Hai Khang from Vietnam who garnered 13.717 points. Althea Descutido also salvaged the bronze medal in the clubs event finals of the girls’ rhythmic gymnastics.
Bacolod City’s pride, long jumper Trexie dela Torre ruled the girls’ event at the Mini Stadium in Bukit Jalil last July 22 with a new personal-best of 5.84 meters to steal the top spot from Malaysia's Mahira Hanis Binti Ishak (5.83 m) and Vietnam's Hoang Thanh Giang (5.83 m), who were relegated to silver and bronze medal finish. She earned the Philippines its second gold medal in the 2018 ASG.
Dela Torre eclipsed her personal record of 5.44 m which she set during the 2018 Palarong Pambansa last April in Ilocos Sur. DepEd, in statement, shared that the 16-year-old long jumper is very proud of her achievement noting that it is like fulfilling “her mission in her very first ASG stint.”
"Bago po ‘yung turn ko, nagdasal po ako na sana maganda ‘yung kalalabasan. Ngayon po ini-enjoy ko ‘yung panalo and ang experience ko dito," dela Torre said. Prior to this, she has been a proven winner, having also won the gold medal in the long jump – girls’ category during the 2016 Batang Pinoy National Finals in Tagum City, Davao del Norte. She also represented the country in the recent 13th Southeast Asian Youth Athletics which was held last April in Bangkok, Thailand.
Meanwhile, a Bacolod City native also copped the country’s third gold medal in record-setting fashion in the 2018 ASG. Seventeen-year-old Ann Katherine Quitoy recorded 49.18 meters to set a new mark in javelin throw, and secure the third gold medal for Team Philippines on July 22 at the Mini-Stadium of the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil.
Quitoy shattered Malaysia's 46.04-m record set last year in Singapore, courtesy of Devi Jayaindran Pavithraa. Winning the silver medal was Klinla-Or Supisara of Thailand with a throw of 47.89m, while Firliana Yuni Fira of Indonesia took the bronze with a throw of 43.35 m. She achieved the remarkable feat three months after she shattered the secondary girls record of the same event during the 2018 Palarong Pambansa in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.
High jumper Evangelene Caminong earlier gave the country its first gold when she conquered the event on July 21. Over at the Universiti Teknologi Mara (UTM) Sports Complex in Shah Alam, the boys sepak takraw team brought home the bronze medals in the doubles category, also on July 21.
The 10th ASG is held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from July 19 to 26, 2018. The student-athletes will compete in the following sporting events: athletics, badminton, basketball, gymnastics, sepak takraw, swimming, table tennis, volleyball, and squash.
