If you’re familiar with Mars Ravelo’s Dyesebel and Disney’s The Little Mermaid, where the heroines are sweet, caring, and alluring, then you’re in for a big surprise in the newest drama series, Siren, premiering on Monday, June 4 at 9:45 p.m. on Blue Ant Entertainment.
Siren takes place in Bristol Cove, Washington where based on a myth was the home of the mermaids. These mermaids are notable for attacking sailors and wrecking havoc on ships. Hence, early stories show how these sailors massacre these mythical creatures. The town has still yet to see a real mermaid.
THE SIREN Belgian actress Eline Powell stars as a mermaid looking for her sister
A violent storm is brewing in Bering Strait where three fishermen caught an unexplained moving specimen. Out of nowhere, Navy SEALS come down and steal their “catch” along with an injured crew member.
In the two-part special premiere, we meet Ryn (Eline Powell), running along the forest naked and exhausted. The Belgian actress plays a dangerous and non-speaking, leg-walking with super human strength mermaid visiting this small fishing community. She kills violently without regrets and eats rodents when hungry. She is more like the creature in Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water than the Disney Princess, Ariel.
Dedicated marine biologist Ben Pownall (Alex Roe) comes from a bueno familia and loves to rehabilitate the aquatic life. He has a girlfriend, Maddie Bishop (Fola Evans-Akingbola) who is disliked by his family. He meets Ryn by accident and tries to help her recover from her exhaustion.
Ryn sings with a captivating hymn that puts people in trance especially Ben. He tells her, “The night we met, you sang a song. I can’t get it out of my head. Everywhere I go, I hear it.”
One scene shows a boy swimming in the sea in what looks like a Steven Spielberg’s Jaws copycat but in this case, the shark is the victim by the underwater mystical creatures.
Ryn is causing disruption in the fishing community by looking for her sister, Donna, (Sibongile Mlambo), a feral mermaid caught by the Bristol Cove fishermen that was sent to a government-owned laboratory. Meanwhile, Ben and his friends are also looking for Chris (Chad Rook), a fisherman attacked by Donna before her capture.
The town folklorist Helen Hawkins is played by Rena Owen who we last saw as Taun We in George Lucas’Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones. She owns a local store and is considered as eccentric by the neighbors.
Ben, Maddie, and Helen work together to help Ryn reunite with her sister. The show is bloody, full of suspense and lethal just because Ryn wants to survive from the onslaught of human beings.
One has to succumb to fantasy in order to enjoy this series. Do not watch this if you expect to see Dyesebel-like qualities because this is about the murderous creatures known as sirens in Greek and Roman mythology.
Siren is showing exclusive on Blue Ant Entertainment. Available on SKYcable channels 53 (SD) and 196 (HD), SKYdirect channel 35, Destiny Cable channel 53, and Cablelink channels 37 (SD) and 313 (HD)on Monday, June 4, at 9:45 p.m.
