BFAR raises red tide alert in parts of Luzon, Visayas

By Richa Noriega The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) raised a red tide alert on Tuesday in provinces where shellfish were positive for paralytic shellfish poison beyond the regulatory limit.
BFAR said all types of shellfish and acetes or alamang (tiny shrimps) gathered from these areas are not safe for human consumption:
  • Palawan
    • Puerto Princesa Bay
    • Puerto Princesa City
  • Bohol
    • Dauis
    • Tagbilaran City
  • Western Samar
    • Irong-irong Bay
    • San Pedro Bay
  • Leyte
    • Cancato Bay
    • Carigara Bay
    • Tacloban City
  • Surigao del Sur
    • Lianga Bay
Silanga Bay in Western Samar is now free of the toxic red tide, BFAR said. According to BFAR, fish, squids, shrimps, and crabs are safe for human consumption provided that they are fresh and washed thoroughly, and internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking.
