San Beda University denies accusation of on-campus rebel recruitment

San Beda University (SBU) denied that a recruitment to the New People's Army is happening on campus.

SBU was among the 18 universities tagged by National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) spokesperson Lieutenant General Antonio Parlade Jr. as alleged recruitment hubs of NPA.

In a statement, SBU underscored the importance of exercising academic freedom.

"San Beda University endeavors at the highest of academic standards and advocates high levels of research. The Bedan community must therefore safeguard the freedom to study; to research, and to engage in discourse as essential components of university-level education," its statement read

"The university shall exercise the academic freedom to determine who should teach, what to teach, how to teach, and who should be taught while maintaining its fidelity to its Vision and Mission. There should be no undue curtailment of academic freedom as this is ultimately a disservice to higher education," it further read

SBU reiterated that it will not allow the recruitment of its faculty members, students, and personnel to organizations that profess atheistic and godless ideologies and organizations that advocate violence and destabilization.

The university added that it does not align itself with associations that profess beliefs incompatible with the rule of law, the teachings of the Church, and the Hallmarks of Benedictine Education.

"We enjoin all administrators, faculty, students, and personnel to keep San Beda University free of links with organizations that undermine peace, justice, and freedom," SBU said.
