MTRCB clarifies stand on Netflix, other streaming services

After receiving a huge amount of criticism asking the Senate to craft a law that would allow it to regulate streaming service companies, the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) on Friday maintained it wasn't what they were asking for.

During a budget hearing in the Senate, MTRCB chair Rachel Arenas said they are not insisting on regulating Netflix among other streaming services, but they are hoping such companies would opt to "adopt" the local rating system for movies and television shows.

"We are not going to regulate video on demand. We are going to do co-regulation," she said. "Hinihiling lang naman namin sa kanila is to adopt our ratings."

She went on to divulge Netflix as with several other streaming companies were actually asking them about this.

"They are the ones asking what law they should follow. We told them we would first make guidelines," Arenas related.

The hearing was called with the MTRCB asking for a P105.93-million budget for next year.
