By Jel Santos After holding a fundraising event for the families affected by Taal Volcano’s eruption, a group of Sarah Geronimo’s fans turned over a P100, 000 check to the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) on Wednesday afternoon. (Photo by Jansen Romero) On Saturday, the Popsters Fans Club held a dance fundraiser at the Rizal Park in Manila. Hundreds of people from all walks of life---young and old---danced to the tune of the popstar’s popular song, “Tala.” They paid P100 as a registration fee for the fundraiser which was donated to PRC. Barry Juanico, Popsters Fans Club president, handed over a check amounting to P100,000 to PRC Secretary-General Elizabeth Zavalla at the PRC Headquarters in Mandaluyong City. “I know that PRC has the heart to help our fellow Filipinos every time that there is calamity. Philippine Red Cross deserves to be the beneficiary of our fundraising activity,” Juanico said. PRC Chairman Richard Gordon expressed gratitude to Sarah and her fans for giving cash assistance to Taal victims. “Thank you Sarah Geronimo and fans for supporting this cause and for trusting and choosing Philippine Red Cross as your partner of choice,” he said in a statement. “We appreciate the efforts of Popsters in encouraging others to help communities affected by Taal eruption, nakatataba ng puso ang pagtulong ni Sarah na kahit noon pa man ay talaga ng mapag-kawang-gawa lalo kapag may mga ganitong kalamidad,” Zavalla, for her part, said. According to PRC, the donated funds will augment resources expended by PRC staff and volunteers for continuing assistance to those families affected by Taal’s eruption. Since January 12, PRC said it has established 45 Welfare Desks in Batangas, Cavite, and Laguna to provide psychosocial activities, 4,374 individuals reached through Psychosocial support affected by the volcanic eruption. Moreover, the organization distributed food items to 827 families (462 families with standard ration; 365 families with on standard food ration), non-food items to 556 families (NFI- 462; blankets and towels; 94) in Batangas and Cavite, 229 Food items were distributed in Cavite (Non-standard) and 538 bottled water was also distributed (Cavite 365, Laguna 173). “Volunteers and staff distributed 11,500 Liters of water to 276 families or 1,379 individuals, 149 individuals reached through hygiene promotion, 25 Units of portalets and 5 Water Tankers were installed in Batangas.” Also, Red Cross set up six First Aid stations, mobilized 10 ambulances in Cavite, Laguna and Batangas, 101 individuals were given Medical Support, 10 were assisted through ambulance transport and Blood Pressure consultation for 85 individuals while 311 individuals were assisted to evacuate.
