Legarda to run as Antique congresswoman

By Tara Yap Iloilo City—Senator Loren Legarda is running as congressional representative of the lone district of Antique province. Antique Governor Rhodora “Dodod” Cadiao filed Legarda’s certificate of candidacy (COC) before the Commission on Elections (Comelec) office in San Jose de Buenavista town Wednesday. Legarda is at The Hague, Netherlands for the launching of the Global Commission on Adaptation. She is running against Exequiel “Boy Ex” Javier, former governor and former congressman. Legarda’s entry into the political arena of Antique will challenge the political clout of Boy Ex Javier, who ruled Antique for decades. His son Paolo is the incumbent congressman. Boy Ex Javier is the younger brother of slain Antique governor Evelio Javier, one of the martyrs during the 1986 People Power revolution. But many Antiqueños were not happy that Boy Ex destroyed the image of is older brother Evelio with the numerous graft and corruption charges slapped against him. Boy Ex unsuccessfully ran for governor against Cadiao in May 2016 elections. Legarda claims to have roots in Antique, the home province of her great grandfather Ariston Gella, a member of the Malolos Congress that crafted the first Philippine Constitution. Meanwhile, Legarda is also facing issues regarding her residency status in the province.
