Police officers in San Juan City, who will enforce the city’s health and safety measures while on bicycles, are now equipped with body cameras in apprehending violators.
Mayor Francis Zamora on Thursday led the launching of the San Juan Police Bike Patrollers, who will be enforcing the implementation of the city’s New Normal, Face Shield, and Anti-Spitting Ordinances.
Zamora said the local government has issued body cameras to the city’s 30 police bike patrollers to ensure that health violations are documented and recorded on video.
“Their work is to go around the bike lanes, as well as along the narrow streets of our city to ensure the safety of bikers,” Zamora said Thursday.
“Bike patrollers will also patrol alleys and smaller roads in San Juan that police mobile vehicles can no longer access. They will all be equipped with body cameras,” he added.
The mayor underscored the importance of using body cameras in enforcing quarantine measures in the city for some violators deny their mistakes.
“When we use body cameras, there is a video, there are photos. If a violation was committed, there is footage that can be used if someone contests his violation,” he explained.
Zamora said at least 100 body cameras will be distributed to traffic and peace and order enforcers, as well as police officers manning the streets of San Juan.
On World Bicycle Day last June 3, the local government installed bollards along select streets in the city to protect cyclists along bike lanes from fast-moving vehicles.
