Sulu lockdown lifted

ZAMBOANGA CITY – The provincial government of Sulu lifted the 14-day lockdown it imposed early this month after Malaysia also sealed its border with the Philippines.

Sulu Governor Abdusakur Tan said on Tuesday, January 19, his government has lifted the lockdown on Monday, January 18, after learning that Filipinos were not being allowed to leave or enter Malaysia due to the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) variant.

 “We need to lift the lockdown in order for  shipping lines and airlines  to resume their respective commercial trips to the province (and so that) trade and commerce may now commence in the province,” Tan said.

Tan said the province has returned to its previous status of modified general community quarantine (MGCQ), but has adopted stricter measures, particularly on minimum health protocols.

He said visitors may now visit the province, but they would have to submit themselves to a 10-day quarantine to make sure they are not carriers of the coronavirus.

For locally stranded individuals (LSIs) and authorized persons outside residence (APORs), they would have to present their reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test results indicating that they are negative for COVID-19.

The governor said they have to strictly observe the minimum health protocol to prevent the virus from spreading among his constituents.
