A catalog of new shows available in one of the biggest video platforms this month

Metro Manila is once more under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ). Due to the recent surge in cases because of the Delta variant, the latest hard lockdown would last until Aug. 20 or until further notice. Our only escape is online, to be specific, through our favorite programs and series. Add these titles to your queue of shows to watch on Netflix this August.

Vivo

A music-loving kinkajou, a rainforest honey bair, embarks on an adventure of a lifetime from Havana to Miami to fulfill his destiny and deliver a love song to his cherished owner’s long long-lost love, with the help of Gabi—an energetic tween who bounces to the beat of her own offbeat drum. Watch out for Sony Pictures Animation’s very first musical adventure featuring all-original music written and performed by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Now showing.

Brand New Cherry Flavor

The horror-drama hybrid is set in the early ’90s, following the story of a filmmaker in Hollywood who was supposed to make her movie, but tumbles down a hallucinatory rabbit hole of sex, magic, revenge. And kittens. Available starting today, Aug. 13.

Bliss and Sunday Beauty Queen

Two Filipino films will be available for online stream on the 15th, namely Jerrold Tarog’s multi-awarded psychological thriller Bliss (2017) and Baby Ruth Villarama’s documentary Sunday Beauty Queen about domestic workers who participate in beauty contests.

The Chair

Dr. Ji-Yoon Kim, depicted by award-winning actress Sandra Oh, is the first woman of color to become chair at the prestigious Pembroke University. She tries to meet the dizzying demands and high expectations of a failing English department. The educator faces a unique set of challenges in this dark comedy. The series debuts on Aug. 20.

Sweet Girl

Also to screen beginning Aug. 20 is action thriller film Sweet Girl. A devastated husband, played by Jason Momoa, vows to bring justice to the people responsible for his wife’s death while protecting the only family he has left, his daughter.

The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf

The spinoff of the main series explores the backstory of Vesemir, a witcher or genetically modified monster hunter, known as Geralt of Rivia’s grizzled mentor in the Witcher original books and games. It screens Aug. 23.

Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha

A beautiful rom-com story that promises to make audiences fall in love, Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha depicts back-and-forth, up-and-down feel-good romance between the pragmatic dentist Yoon Hye-jin (Shin Min-a) and the unemployed jack-of-all-trades Du-sik (Kim Seon-ho) in the seaside town of Gongjin where human warmth and the scent of sea salt linger on. The series features the detailed artistry and vision of Director Yu Je-won who helmed Oh My Ghost and Tomorrow with You. And the casting of two actors, Shin Min-a and Kim Seon-ho, already has countless drama fans eagerly waiting. For release on Aug. 28.

Sparking Joy

Global organization guru and author Marie Kondo is back to help people transform their homes while transforming their lives in the new series. Marie takes her life changing method a step further to help three deserving businesses organize their workplace along with an emotional tidy up of one employee’s life whether it's in the home, work, personal life and/or relationships. Premieres Aug. 31.
