Meteor shower to regale sky gazers on July 29-30

With clear skies, sky gazers may be able to catch sight of shooting stars starting before midnight on July 29, Wednesday, until the dawn of July 30, Thursday.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the Southern Delta Aquarids meteor shower will be observed from July 28 to 31 but it is estimated to peak between July 29 and July 30.

The weather bureau said this meteor is "part of a complex of radiants in Aquarius, Capricornus and Pisces Austrinus" constellations, which when "combine(d) with sporadic and early Perseid activity will provide a nice display of meteors in the last week of the month." 

The Southern Delta Aquarids meteor shower occurs ahead of the Perseids meteor shower in August. 

PAGASA said the stream of the Aquarids meteor shower normally produces about five to 10 meteors per hour with overall activity of about 15 meteors per hour under good sky conditions. 

Meteor showers are safe to watch with the naked eye.

Weather in the next few days

The intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) will be the dominant weather system across Palawan, Visayas, and Mindanao in the next few days. 

PAGASA said the LPA east of Mindanao has already fizzled out on Thursday afternoon but the ITCZ may still bring scattered light to moderate rain showers with at times heavy rains during thunderstorms over Palawan, and most of Visayas and Mindanao.

ITCZ is the region near the equator where winds from various directions converge, which is usually a breeding ground for localized thunderstorms, and sometimes a potential low pressure area.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy and may also experience isolated rain showers due to the ITCZ or local thunderstorms.

Areas that are highly susceptible to flash floods or landslides may have to take extra precautions in the event of severe thunderstorms that usually occur in the afternoon or evening.

Meanwhile, no gale warning has been raised in any part of the country on Thursday afternoon but PAGASA still advised seafarers and fisherfolk using small boats to remain alert during severe thunderstorms as sea condition may become rough.
