Meet Web-Weaver, the first gay Spider-man joining the Spider-verse

The Spider-verse is set to introduce the first gay version of the friendly-neighborhood superhero

Dubbed Web-Weaver, the queer webslinger will make its comic book debut through “Edge of the Spider-Verse #5.” Marvel describes the character as “a not-so-mild mannered fashion designer at Van Dyne gets spider-powers and shows us a very different kind of Spider-Slayer.”

Much like the other Spider-man from alternate universes, Web-Weaver dons a costume with spider elements, reminiscent of the one worn by the hero from Queens, New York only made more, well, fashionable. According to costume and character designer Kris Anka, the character’s black and gold look was inspired by the creations of late fashion geniuses Thierry Mugler and Alexander McQueen. While Web-Weaver is here to raise the LGBTQIA+ flag in the Spider-verse, comic book author Steve Foxe notes that the upcoming hero “can’t–and shouldn’t–represent all gay men,” through a Tweet.

Apart from Web-Weaver, “Edge of the Spider-Verse #5” will also introduce Hunter-Spider, described as “the most hardcore Spider yet,” asking fans to “imagine a world where Sergei Kravinoff got Spider-Powers.”

“Edge of the Spider-Verse #5” is set to be released in September.
