DepEd comes up with collection of selected Central Luzon folk songs

By Donna Rempillo SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga – The Department of Education (DepEd) in Region 3 has revived old musical pieces to be included in the Compendium of Selected Folk Songs in the region. (DepEd Region III / MANILA BULLETIN) (DepEd Region III / MANILA BULLETIN) It comes with printed musical scores with chords and minus one renditions for classroom purposes. The compendium contains a total of 74 folksongs revived from the Book of Folksong of Region 3, including 24 local songs and 26 regional songs. Musical pieces that were included in the collection were reviewed and finalized by selected music teachers, members of the DepEd Region 3 Symphonic Band and education supervisors in-charge of music. “We have gathered and reviewed the folksongs from the old compilation and added other homegrown musical pieces. We also enhanced the arrangements and made them user-friendly for teachers and students,” said Rafael Rubio, conductor of the DepEd Region III Symphonic Band. Eight old musical pieces were revived from the province of Bataan, and six from Aurora and Tarlac. “This collection of Selected Folk Songs in Region 3 was crafted to cater to the demand for music teaching and geared towards imparting knowledge to the students and developing their sense of history and cultural identity,” said DepEd Region 3 Director Nicolas T. Capulong. He added the material was “contextualized and developmentally-appropriate with complete and precise notation, with chords and a minus one, to suit the needs of every teacher in teaching music with ease and confidence in harmony with the content and performance standards with the K to 12 curriculum.” The completed list of songs and compilation of videos can be accessed through the DepEd Region 3 website region3.deped.gov.ph.
