NAIA flight operations normal despite power outage due to electrical system upgrade

Flight operations at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 operated normally on Tuesday, Aug. 8, despite the four-hour scheduled power interruptions due to upgrading of its electrical system.

In a statement, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) said the scheduled power interruption on Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 9, is in connection with the replacement of defective medium voltage power cables and vacuum circuit breakers in two of the Terminal’s substations.

The power outage was from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesday but if energization activities cannot be completed within the four-hour window, there will be another set of power outage on Wednesday.

But MIAA Officer-in-Charge Bryan Co stressed that the power interruption will have no impact to flight operations.

“We apologize for the inconvenience due to this scheduled limited power interruption. This is an inevitable consequence of our commitment to rehabilitate and upgrade our T3 electrical systems,” said Co.

Meanwhile, AirAsia Philippines spokesman Steve Dailisan said the scheduled power interruption will not affect any flight movements at the airport.

"In light of the scheduled power interruption at the South Concourse of the NAIA Terminal 3 where AirAsia Philippines’ head office is located, the management has decided to implement a work-from-home arrangement for non-operation staff for 8 August 2023,” said Dailisan.

“Essential work on the other hand will remain on-site, such as those under the Operations Control Center," he added.
