Weather disturbance east of PH now a tropical storm, to enter PAR this weekend

By Ellalyn de Vera Ruiz The weather disturbance monitored off the Pacific Ocean has developed on Tuesday into a tropical storm with international name “Kammuri” ahead of its entry into the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) this weekend. 1-him-coloredPhilippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) senior weather forecaster Chris Perez, however, said Kammuri was still too far to adversely affect the country. It was estimated 2,585 kilometers east of Visayas on Tuesday morning. Perez said the weather disturbance has maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 80 kph, moving westward at 35 kph. Should Kammuri maintain its current speed and track, he said the storm will likely be inside the PAR on Saturday or Sunday and will be given a local name “Tisoy”, the 20th cyclone this year. PAGASA is currently looking into two possible scenarios regarding Kammuri's track. First is a possible landfall over Southern Luzon, and second is just a close approach toward Northern Luzon or recurvature away from the country. Perez explained that some tropical cyclones during this period are landfalling or crossing the landmass of Southern Luzon or Visayas, while some cyclones are recurving towards Northern Luzon or do not directly affect the country. He advised the public to begin monitoring official PAGASA updates regarding tropical storm Kammuri. For now, PAGASA weather specialist Meno Mendoza said the tail-end of cold front, which is the boundary between warm and cold air masses, and northeast monsoon or “amihan” will be the dominant weather systems across most of the country. The cold front will bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms over Quezon, Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Sorsogon, Masbate, Biliran, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Samar and Northern Samar. Meanwhile, the amihan could bring cloudy skies with light rains over Abra, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Apayao, Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya and Quirino. Metro Manila, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Aurora, Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac and Zambales may experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains from the amihan. The rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms. The public should remain vigilant at times of severe thunderstorm activity as it may trigger flash floods in low-lying areas or landslides in mountainous regions.
