TESDA-trained volunteers develop portable handwashing facilities

Portable handwashing facilities that would help in containing the spread of COVID-19 have been developed by graduates of accredited technical vocational institutions (TVI) of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).

Fourteen portable handwashing sinks were built by the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) graduates of the Liceo Excelsis Global Incorporated to augment the need for hygiene facilities during the national health emergency.
According to TESDA, this was done in partnership with the local government unit of General Santos City. These portable handwashing sinks will be set up in various isolation facilities and at the entry points within the city.
The portable sink is composed with built-in faucet, stainless steel drop-in sink and recyclable drum storage. The materials used were donated by Mrs. Jane Rivera, wife of city mayor Ronnel Rivera.
Meanwhile, TESDA Secretary Isidro Lapeña lauded the commitment of the volunteers to share their efforts with the local and national government in the fight against the dreaded COVID-19.
"This proves that our partnership with the local government units and the private sector is crucial in this time of crisis. We hope that the spirit of volunteerism that we have in TESDA will also inspire our kababayan," Lapeña said.
Previously, the SMAW volunteers also built two decontamination and sanitation tents which were funded by Senator Manny Pacquiao.
The tents were donated to the Dr. Jorge P. Royeca Hospital to ensure the safety of the people coming in and out of the healthcare facility.
The volunteers said they are willing to produce more if requested and materials are available.
TESDA Region XII Director Rafael Abrogar thanked those who have supported TESDA in the said initiatives.
TESDA schools in the provinces, in partnership with the private sector, have also been producing protective suits or coveralls for the medical workers battling against COVID-19.
The agency also shared that to date, around 200,000 washable face masks and 17,000 face shields have been produced and donated by TESDA to the frontliners including hospital workers, LGU and barangay health workers, and uniformed personnel.
