A Filipino teenager was punched in the head and suffered from a racial slur while playing at a basketball tournament in Oakland, California.

The boy, identified only by his first name, Evan, was playing at the Battle of the Bay basketball tournament organized by Grassroots 365 at Oakland’s Soldiertown gym on Saturday, May 2, according to a report from KPIX 5.

A video recording showed Evan trying to grab a loose ball before an opposing player reached it. The player can then be seen passing the ball to another teammate and pushed Evan. Evan managed to get up but was again pushed to the ground by a second opposing player standing nearby. The player then eventually punched Evan in the head.

Evan reportedly suffered a concussion.

“Not one single parent stood up to go (and) protect my son. I ran across the gym to get him,” Lennie, his mother, told KPIX 5. “They did use the ‘C’ word.”

Prior to the incident, players from the opposing team also repeatedly called Evan and his teammates, who were also of Asian descent, racial slurs.

“We are sickened by the senseless and deplorable actions of individual players on the court this past weekend in Oakland. We have taken swift action to address the individuals involved and will continue to diligently and comprehensively investigate the incident that took place,” the Grassroots 365 said in a statement.

The father of Evan said no one even bothered to take action after the incident. "The worst part is no one apologized," Eduardo, Evan's father, told KPIX 5.

Some parents also claimed that the director of the tournament initially refused to watch the video of the incident. The player who threw the punch at Evan will be banned from Sunday's game but his teammate who initially pushed Evan will not face any consequences.

The parents of Evan are planning to file a report with the Oakland Police Department regarding the incident.
