4 quakes jolt Davao, Central Mindanao regions

By Mike Crismundo BUTUAN CITY – Four mild tectonic earthquakes jolted Davao and Central Mindanao regions Thursday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said. The regional Offices of Civil Defense (OCDs) in Southern and Central Mindanao regions and disaster risk reduction and management councils reported no damage or injury. In its bulletin, Phivolcs said a 2.5 magnitude earthquake was recorded at 5:42 a.m. on Thursday (Feb. 20). The epicenter was plotted 77 kilometers (km) southeast of Jose Abad Santos town, Davao Occidental province. The earthquake had a depth of 21 km, it said. Earlier, a 2.6 magnitude tremor was registered at 5:22 a.m. The epicenter was traced only 15 km southeast of that same town and province, the state agency said. The tremor had a depth of 162 km, it also said. At 5:14 a.m. of the same day (Feb. 20), a 3.0 magnitude earthquake was also recorded, the state agency said. The epicenter was located only 5 km northeast from the town proper of Columbio of Sultan Kudarat province of Central Mindanao region, Phivolcs said. The earthquake had a depth of 12 km. In its instrumental intensities, Phivolcs said Intensity III was also registered in Kidapawan City of North Cotabato province and Intensity I in Malungon, Sarangani; Tupi and Koronadal City of South Cotabato province. Earlier, a 2.4 magnitude tremor was also registered at 3:46 a.m. on the same day and its epicenter was pinpointed 18 km northeast of nearby Palimbang town of that same province, with a depth of 14 km, Phivolcs also said in its bulletin. The four tremors that struck Thursday morning in Davao and Central Mindanao regions were all tectonic in origin and no aftershock or tsunami alert was raised by the state agency while the provincial disaster risk reduction and management councils reported no damage or injury. Earthquakes are common in the Philippines which sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where continental plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activities.
