EJ Obiena impresses anew with gold-medal win in Germany

Two-time Olympian EJ Obiena impressed once more by posting a 5.82-meter performance to complete a gold-medal win in the 2026 Internationales Stadionfest (ISTAF) in Berlin, Germany Sunday, Aug. 30.
Coming off a fifth-place finish at Diamond League’s Zurich leg in Switzerland, the 30-year-old Obiena bounced back after clearing 5.82 meters to conquer the 10-man field before a huge German crowd.
“5.82m here in Berlin for the [gold]. Thank you @istaf_berlin for having me. Hope to see you again next year!!! [Para sa bayan],” Obiena wrote on his social media post.
After pulling off a 5.90-meter performance a few days ago, the pride of Tondo, Manila topped the event with Belgian Ylio Philtjens (5.72m) and Frenchman Robin Emig (5.72m) settling for the silver and bronze honors, respectively.
It marked Obiena’s ninth gold this year.
Obiena is gearing up for his title defense in the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan.
Obiena’s 5.90-meter effort in Zurich led to his qualification in the 2027 World Athletics Championships set in Beijing, China.
