Manila logs 33 flu-like illness cases amid post-flood recovery

The local government of Manila recorded 33 new cases of influenza-like illness (ILI) on Monday, August 31, bringing the city’s total number of cases to 1,203 since the start of the year, based on the city government’s latest disease monitoring report.

The increase came as Manila continued to recover from days of heavy rains and flooding brought by the Southwest Monsoon, or habagat.

Despite the recent flooding, the city government said all evacuation centers had been cleared by Sunday afternoon, Aug. 30, as floodwaters receded and some areas began to experience fair weather.

The city also continued distributing free doxycycline through its health facilities to residents who may have been exposed to floodwaters as part of its efforts to prevent leptospirosis.

Manila recorded four new leptospirosis cases on Aug. 31, bringing the year-to-date total to 556.

Meanwhile, the city logged 24 new dengue cases, raising the total to 2,541 since Jan. 1.

No new cases of cholera, typhoid fever, or confirmed Covid-19 were recorded on Aug. 31.

The city’s cumulative figures as of the same date stood at three cholera cases, 68 typhoid fever cases, 87 confirmed COVID-19 cases, and 312 SARI (severe acute respiratory infection) cases.

The city government continues to monitor disease trends following the recent rains and flooding.

It has reminded residents to remain vigilant against illnesses that may spread or worsen during the rainy season.
