Minor rescued in Ilocos Sur hostage crisis incident

ALILEM, Ilocos Sur — A tense overnight hostage crisis involving a minor ended without bloodshed after police rescued the child and persuaded an armed suspect to surrender following hours of negotiations in Barangay Daddaay here.
The minor was safely rescued on Saturday, August 29, but the standoff continued through the night as police negotiators tried to convince the suspect to peacefully lay down his weapons.
Rather than storm the area, responding police officers, assisted by barangay officials and members of the community, maintained negotiations in a bid to prevent further violence.
The suspect finally began surrendering his weapons on Sunday morning, August 30, first handing over a bolo. About an hour later, he surrendered a 10.5-inch kitchen knife, followed by another bladed weapon before eventually giving himself up without anyone being injured.
Ilocos Sur Police Provincial Office director PCol Agosto M. Asuncion said police prioritized saving lives and peacefully ending the confrontation.
“Our duty as protectors encompasses every individual, including those in acute crisis,” Asuncion said. “True operational excellence is defined by restraint, sound judgment, and an unyielding respect for human life.”
Authorities withheld the identities of the suspect and the minor.
Police have yet to disclose what triggered the hostage-taking, how long the child was held, whether the suspect and the victim were related, and what criminal charges the suspect may face.
The incident remains under investigation.
