The local perfume industry continues to bloom, with homegrown brands creating scents inspired by Filipino stories, memories, and experiences.

At the "Awakening" fragrance community event organized by Judilyn Cruz of FragCom Meet held last Aug. 22 to 23 at Unbox Promenade, GH Mall in San Juan City, more than 30 local perfume brands from across the Philippines, including Mindanao, Batangas, and Northern regions, showcased their creations. Here are five homegrown perfume brands worth discovering:

Founded by entrepreneur and perfumer Gib Osbert Ang, Orca Parfums was born from his desire to revive forgotten fragrance styles while giving them a contemporary touch.

“People’s encouragement, curiosity, and shared love for perfumery have pushed me to refine my craft and explore new possibilities,” he told Manila Bulletin Lifestyle.

Among our favorites are Morning Lust, Sakura et Rose, and Evening Lust, which performed consistently both indoors and outdoors. During our wear test, the fragrances lasted up to six hours, with noticeable projection throughout the day.

Led by cosmetic scientist and perfumer Claire Mavreen,Olfaction creates fragrances designed to transport wearers to people, places, and moments that are either long gone or imagined.

A graduate of Cosmetic Chemistry from Centro Escolar University, Claire draws her scientific background to create distinctive fragrance products. From her latest collection, Two Scoops Please and A Coat of Pastel Purple Clouds stood out among our picks.

Of the fragrances we tested, Olfaction delivered the longest wear time. When applied to pulse points, both scents remained noticeable for around eight hours, making them a strong choice for those who prioritize longevity.

Created by 30-year-old Batangas-based engineer Ian Dominique Arano, Artistry treats fragrance as a way to give form to memories, emotions, and imagination.

“As a Filipino niche fragrance start-up, Artistry approaches perfumery as an art form,” Arano said. “Each creation begins with a story.”

The brand currently offers four scents, with Beauty is Terror and Where Everything Meets standing out among our picks. Both developed nicely on the skin and lasted more than six hours when applied to pulse points, making them worth considering for those who prefer longer-wearing scents.

Headed by singer-songwriter and producer Jessica Rodriguez, also known as Seekada, Moonsteria takes a more personal approach to fragrance. After learning about her rare hearing disorder in 2023, she explored healing and perfumery as new forms of expression. The brand's collections take notes from Philippine folklore, tea rituals, Filipino merienda, nature, music, poetry, and healing.

Sampaguita Polvoron and Midnight Tea are among our favorites. Sampaguita Polvoron offers a playful Filipino gourmand character, while Midnight Tea leans toward a more calming, tea-inspired mood. During our daily-commute wear test, both lasted around four hours, a reasonable performance for their price point.

Founded by 27-year-olds Ayaka Chikusa and Marc Balaoing, Blend Labs creates fragrances inspired by personal memories, from cocktails and beach trips to family gatherings and love letters.

Our picks are Amaretto and Buko Pandan. The latter is especially memorable, with sweet gourmand quality without becoming overly heaving or cloying. It has the nostalgic feel of the Filipino dessert without smelling like a literal bowl of it. Both scents lasted around four hours during our wear test.

Owned by the 28-year-old security network engineer Rochelle Lubao, Parfum Astraux is behind the now-trending Yosi Break, which turns the familiar idea of a cigarette break into an unconventional wearable scent.

“It started as a creation for consumption only,” she said, adding that they later started to sell it.

For those looking for something playful and unexpected, try Sour Candy and Kwantro Kantos. Both have distinctive scent profiles and lasted around six hours when applied to pulse points during our wear test.

With more Filipino perfumers entering the scene, the local fragrance industry continues to grow. These brands are also giving Filipino creators another way to tell stories through scent.
