Remula: DILG 'very serious' in protecting female cops

Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla has declared that the agency is "very serious" when it comes to protecting female police officers from gender-based violence.
Remulla affirmed this commitment during the agency's marathon budget hearing Thursday, Aug. 27 before the House Committee on Appropriations.
Gabriela Party-list Rep. Sarah Elago raised the issue on violence against women and children (VAWC) in the Philippine National Police (PNP) during the budget deliberations.
“We take it very seriously, ma’am, that if there is harassment among the ranks, that we will file the appropriate charges, whoever they may be,” Remulla told the Makabayan lawmaker.
“In fact, maybe a member of Congress was also charged by the PNP for violence against women among his security personnel and the charges have been filed by the DOJ (Department of Justice),” he added, referring to a case involving Marikina 1st district Rep. Marcy Teodoro.
"I take it very seriously and I prosecute it to the best of my ability," Remulla added, referring to such cases in general.
Remulla is concurrently the chairman of National Police Commission (Napolcom), which supervises the PNP.
Elago also urged the DILG to amend its policy on settlement or reconciliation between perpetrators and victims, citing it is against the VAWC law.
“Dapat niyo pong baguhin itong policy na ito kasi sa ilalim po ng anti-VAWC law, bawal po ang pagaareglo lalong lalo na po sa mga kaso ng physical abuse—hindi po dapat ito pinapayagan,” said the congresswoman from the Makabayan bloc.
(You need to change this policy because under the Anti-VAWC law, settlements are prohibited, especially in cases of physical abuse—this should not be allowed.)
Remulla reassured Elago that the DILG will comply and make the necessary adjustments.
“I particularly am very sensitive about this. If there is any complaint against harassment of women personnel in the PNP, I take it very seriously and [I’ll] prosecute [the perpetrators] to the best of my ability,” Remulla said.
Teodoro has repeatedly denied the allegations against him.
