Valenzuela streetsweeper hurt in cable accident gets aid

A streetsweeper who was injured in a cable accident in Valenzuela City received financial assistance as she continues to recover from her injuries.

The victim, identified as “Aling Cora,” was injured after being struck by a cable along M. Delos Reyes Street in Barangay Gen. T. de Leon on Tuesday, Aug. 25.
Mayor Weslie “Wes” Gatchalian visited Cora and coordinated with the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) to provide financial assistance for her immediate needs.
The company that owns the truck involved in the incident also agreed to provide an initial P200,000 in assistance to Cora’s family and shoulder expenses related to the accident.
The city government said Cora and her family will also receive medical, financial, and legal assistance while she recovers.
Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage showed a truck catching a low-hanging cable while traveling along M. Delos Reyes Street. The cable reportedly struck and dragged Cora, causing her injuries.

Following the incident, Gatchalian immediately met with representatives of the companies involved and personnel from the Valenzuela City Police Station (VCPS) to discuss the accident and determine responsibility.
Authorities are still identifying the utility company that owns the cable.
During the meeting, it was also clarified that the cable did not belong to Meralco, although the pole where it was attached is owned by the power distributor.
Gatchalian ordered Meralco to inspect low-hanging cables in the area and identify other potential hazards to motorists and pedestrians.
The local government said the investigation is ongoing.
