By BPI PRESIDENT AND CEO TG LIMCAOCO
One hundred seventy-five years is an extraordinary milestone, and one that carries both pride and responsibility. Very few institutions have had the privilege of serving generations of Filipinos through life’s most important moments, helping them save, build businesses, and achieve their dreams.
For BPI, our anniversary is more than a celebration of longevity. It is an opportunity to reflect on a simple question: what allows an institution to remain relevant for nearly two centuries? Many would point to innovation. Others would point to resilience. I believe it begins with something even simpler: an unwavering focus on the customer.
When BPI was established in 1851, the Philippines looked very different. Banking was conducted through ledgers, handwritten records, and face-to-face conversations. Since then, we've witnessed enormous changes—not only in banking, but in the country itself.
Yet despite all those changes, one truth has remained constant: people don’t aspire for financial products. They aspire for what those products make possible — starting a business, buying a home, educating their children, recovering from setbacks, and building a more secure future. Understanding that difference has shaped BPI for 175 years. It continues to shape how we serve our customers today.
That's why one of the things I often tell our teams is this: People don't really want a bank. They want a simpler, better life. That perspective has shaped every major chapter of BPI's history.
When we introduced modern banking to the Philippines, it wasn't simply about bringing new financial services to the country. It was about helping Filipinos participate in a growing economy. When we pioneered ATM banking, the goal wasn't to showcase new technology. It was to give customers access to their money beyond traditional banking hours. When we embraced digital banking, the objective wasn't to become more digital for its own sake. It was to make banking faster, more convenient, and more accessible. Today, that same thinking guides our investments in agency banking, allowing us to bring banking services closer to communities where convenience means something different for every customer.
Looking back, it's easy to celebrate these milestones as moments of innovation. I see them differently. They are moments of listening. Each innovation began with the same question: How can we make life better for our customers?
The answers have changed over 175 years. The question never has. That mindset has become even more important today.
Artificial intelligence is transforming industries. Digital payments happen in seconds. Financial services are becoming increasingly connected. These advances are exciting, and they hold tremendous promise for expanding financial inclusion and improving customer experiences. But technology alone does not create meaningful innovation. Innovation begins with understanding people. Technology is an enabler. Trust is the foundation.
The institutions that will thrive in the future won't necessarily be those with the newest technology. They will be those that know their customers best and continuously evolve alongside them.
But customer obsession isn't built through strategy alone. It's brought to life by people.
For 175 years, generations of BPI employees have been the face of that commitment. Every account we open, every loan we approve, every payment we process, every investment we recommend, every digital solution we build, and every concern we resolve is more than a banking transaction. It is an opportunity to make someone's life a little easier, a little better, and a little more secure.
Looking ahead, I have no doubt that banking will continue to evolve. The possibilities are immense. But I also believe that the next breakthrough in banking won't simply come from a new technology. It will come from listening more closely, understanding more deeply, and responding more thoughtfully to the people we serve.
As we celebrate BPI's 175th anniversary, we're proud of the milestones we've achieved. More importantly, we're grateful for the trust that generations of Filipinos have placed in us.
That trust has been our greatest privilege. It has also been our greatest responsibility. And it is why, after 175 years, our most enduring competitive advantage isn't simply our history. It is our commitment to continuously earning the right to serve our customers, today and for generations to come. In doing so, we fulfill our purpose of building a better Philippines—one family, one community at a time.
