Actor Niño Muhlach has admitted that he fell asleep while driving, taking full responsibility for the vehicular accident in Antipolo that resulted in a pedestrian being hit and nearby establishments sustaining damage.
Muhlach made the admission in an official statement posted on Facebook, clarifying that he had not personally spoken about the cause of the incident prior.
He explained that the initial report pointing to mechanical failure was based on preliminary police findings and did not come from him.
“The initial information released stating the crash was caused by mechanical failure was based solely on the preliminary findings of the police investigation, not from my own words,” Muhlach said.
The veteran actor then offered his own account of what happened.
“I want to be completely clear and honest: The accident was entirely my fault,” he said.
Muhlach admitted he was driving the vehicle himself when the accident occurred.
According to the actor, exhaustion due to his demanding work schedule caused him to fall asleep behind the wheel.
“While fatigue overtook me, that is no excuse. Falling asleep at the wheel led directly to hitting a pedestrian and damaging nearby establishments,” he added.
Muhlach said he is prepared to face the legal consequences of the incident.
“My priority right now is ensuring that the affected individual receives all necessary care, support and medical assistance and that all damages caused to the properties and establishments are fully compensated and rectified,” he said.
“I am deeply sorry to the victim, their family, and everyone affected by my negligence,” he added.
He further assured the public that he is cooperating with authorities as the matter is being addressed.
