'Habagat' to prevail despite Typhoon Obet's exit, says PAGASA

The southwest monsoon or “habagat” will continue to affect Luzon even after Typhoon Obet (international name “Saudel”) left the country’s area of responsibility, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Tuesday, Aug. 25.
PAGASA weather specialist Veronica Torres said Obet’s movement near the northern boundary of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) could further enhance the southwest monsoon.
“Inaasahan natin na kikilos itong dating Bagyong Obet na may international name na Saudel dito sa may hilaga ng ating Philippine Area of Responsibility at sa pagkilos nga niya sa ating hilaga ay posibleng makahatak pa ito ng southwest monsoon or ‘habagat’ (We expect former Typhoon Obet, with the international name Saudel, to move north of our Philippine Area of Responsibility and as it moves north, it may further draw in the southwest monsoon or ‘habagat’),” she said.
Obet exited the PAR on Monday evening, Aug. 24.
As of 3 a.m. Tuesday, Saudel was located 1,180 kilometers east-northeast of extreme Northern Luzon, with maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 185 kph.
It was moving west-northwestward at 25 kph.
Meanwhile, Tropical Depression Atsani was located 1,760 kilometers east of Northern Luzon as of 3 a.m., moving northward at 30 kph.
Because Atsani is close to the PAR boundary, Torres said PAGASA is not ruling out the possibility that it may enter the PAR.
PAGASA is also monitoring the low-pressure area, formerly Tropical Depression Neneng (international name “Gaenari”).
As of 3 a.m., the LPA was located 670 kilometers northwest of Itbayat, Batanes, and was no longer affecting the country.
Due to the prevalence of the habagat, Torres said Metro Manila, Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Cavite, Batangas, and Rizal may experience cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms over the next 24 hours.
The rest of the country will have partly cloudy skies with chances of isolated rain showers or thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening.
