Bulacan's giant pastillas wows crowd at food festival

Bulacan Governor Daniel R. Fernando hailed the creativity and resourcefulness of Bulakenyos as a 10‑foot‑wide pastillas de leche took center stage at the Bestival Foodie Deals showcase of local flavors on Sunday, Aug. 23, at a mall in Baliwag.

In a message delivered by his representative, Tricia Salviejo, Fernando said the giant delicacy was more than a culinary feat -- it was a celebration of Bulakenyos’ hard work, ingenuity, and support for small entrepreneurs.
The initiative highlights local Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and their exclusive promos while preserving Bulacan’s rich culinary traditions.
Jesusa Villanueva, OIC head of Baliwag City Arts, Culture, and Tourism Office, echoed the governor’s remarks, noting that pastillas are not only a Bulacan trademark but also recognized nationwide and abroad.
Following the unveiling, Joy Joaquin of Borlas de Mayumo led a pastillas‑wrapping demonstration for students from Baliwag North and South Central Schools, showcasing the traditional “pabalat” paper‑cutting heritage of San Miguel.
The San Miguel pastillas team used 180 liters of pure carabao’s milk to craft the giant confection, yielding 4,000 servings distributed free to shoppers.
Pastillas de leche, a beloved milk‑based treat, remains a symbol of Bulacan’s culinary heritage in its many forms -- soft, hard, toasted, or filled.
