The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) is considering recommendations to ban Facebook in the country.
Reasons cited by CICC Executive Director Undersecretary Renato “Aboy” Paraiso are misinformation and protecting children from online abuse. He also mentioned his awareness that blocking the platform would have social and political implications.
He also says this is to get the social media platform to comply with the country’s legislation, further citing their engagement with Roblox that complied with the government’s requirements to improve child safety.
The Philippines is among the top global users of Facebook, with about 95 million users.
There is currently no actual ban or attempts to ban Facebook happening, and CICC is only considering it.
