La Trinidad declares state of calamity

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – Mayor Roderick Awingan announced the declaration of a state of calamity after typhoons Luis and Maymay, the southwest monsoon (Habagat), and African Swine Fever (ASF) inflicted extensive damage on the municipality.

Resolution No. 374‑2026, approved August 18, noted that La Trinidad recorded 1,558.4 millimeters of rain from August 3 to 11, triggering massive landslides that killed two people, destroyed critical infrastructure, and cut off several communities.

The agricultural sector, the town’s economic backbone, suffered heavy losses with damage to homes, greenhouses, irrigation canals, and slope protection systems. 

ASF outbreaks also killed 62 pigs and forced the depopulation of 221 more, amounting to P464,000 in losses.

The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) reported initial damages of P58 million covering public infrastructure, crops, machinery, facilities, and livestock.

Awingan said the calamity declaration allows the release of the P13‑million Quick Response Fund for immediate relief and repairs, while the municipality will seek additional support from national agencies for rehabilitation.
